A Terrigal Business Improvement District (BID) - Will it tax you more?

Former Terrigal Chamber of Commerce secretary and local solicitor Trevor Drake, is trying to form a Terrigal Business Improvement District (BID) and according to documents distributed to local businesses, wants to have a special levy to fund this not for profit group.

Terrigal already has 2 not for profit groups, who work in collaboration, in the best interests of Terrigal, being this chamber, and the Terrigal Area Residents Association. Neither of these groups are funded through taxes or levies.

Mr. Drake held a forum on Wednesday, the 15 December 2010 at the Terrigal SLSC to discuss his plans for the BID. The meeting was attended by a very small number of businesses. The Federal Member for Robertson, Deborah O'Neill (ALP), attended the meeting and threw her support behind Mr. Drake and his moves to establish the BID.

The State Member for Terrigal, Chris Hartcher, was not invited to attend the meeting.

Mr. Drake has been reported in the Sunday Telegraph on the 12 December 2010, as the ALP candidate for the state seat of Terrigal in next years NSW State election. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/the-money-in-the-budgie-smugglers/story-fn6bmfwf-1225969385461

At the meeting a question posed to guest presenter, Ms Brownwyn Clarke from Lane Cove Alive (Lane Coves's BID), who made it clear that a BID must be independent and transparent and free of politics, whether it was 'right for a candidate in an election to be involved in a BID' stated that this should not occur and this person should declare this and resign.

The chamber has written to Mr. Drake requesting him to clarify the his reported candidacy.
